What is a Sludge Judge?

How to Use Sludge Judge:
- Lower to the bottom of the tank.
- Float valve opens, allowing liquid to flow in.
- This sets the check valve, trapping the mixture inside.
- Read the amount of solids in the sample using the 1′ increments marked on the sections.
How do you sample sludge?
Using a 500 mL glass beaker and a stainless steel trowel, collect the sample from the belt filter press as the sludge falls into the roll-off container. The first grab sample and all remaining grabs should be approximately equal in volume (~ 200 mL). Do not forget to collect any required field duplicates or blanks.

- Slowly lower the tube into the septic tank until it touches the bottom of the tank.

How much sludge is normal in a septic tank?
A septic tank should always be “filled” to its normal liquid level, or the bottom of the outlet pipe which carries effluent to the absorption area. This normal liquid level is usually between 8” to 12” from the top of the tank on average (see picture at right).

The middle section connects the top and bottom sections, order additional middle sections to increase the overall length. The top section has a nylon rope that aids in sampling.

Which is the best way to measure sludge depth?
Best operation in terms of effluent clarity is typically attained with as small a sludge inventory (sludge bed) as possible. The sludge depth can be manually measured by such means as using a ‘Sludge Judge”, or automatically by sludge depth meters.
